The Pediatric PGY2 Residency Program is an ASHP-accredited one year residency established to provide specialty training for residents interested in pediatrics. The Pediatric PGY2 Residency Program at Rush was established in 2019 and has one PGY2 pediatric resident. Rush University Medical Center has additional PGY2 programs focused in critical care, solid organ transplant, oncology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, and health system pharmacy administration & leadership.
The goal of the Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) Pediatric PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program is to provide the resident with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of age-related pharmacotherapy in the pediatric population. The resident will be exposed to multiple pediatric populations within an interdisciplinary setting to allow them to become independent clinicians. The resident will be able to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills within pediatric pharmacotherapy through active participation in required and elective patient care rotations and a multitude of other learning opportunities. In addition, the resident will learn how to appropriately review, prepare, and dispense pediatric medications in a safe and efficient manner. Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to independently conduct practice based research and lead practice based quality initiatives.
The residency program is designed to comply with the published accreditation standards of the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP).
Experiences
The Pediatric PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program is a one year residency designed to provide specialty training to a resident interested in pediatric care. The PGY2 resident will have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary care of pediatric patients in an academic teaching facility. The Rush University Children’s hospital within RUMC has 110-licensed beds consisting of an 18-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a 60-bed mixed acuity Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a 20-bed General Pediatric Unit, and a pediatric Emergency Department.
In collaboration with an experienced preceptor, the PGY2 resident will be expected to complete a longitudinal research project suitable for publication. The project will be based on the resident’s interest and will focus on a specific topic in pediatric pharmacotherapy. The project will be presented as a platform presentation at the PPA Annual Meeting. The resident will also have the opportunity to participate in a formal Research Certificate Program.
The PGY2 resident will serve as a preceptor for Doctor of Pharmacy students enrolled at an affiliated college of pharmacy. The resident will also lead organized group discussions with pharmacy students and PGY1 pharmacy residents. Opportunities to provide didactic lectures will be available to the resident. The resident will also have the opportunity to participate in a Teaching Certificate Program if not already completed.
The resident will be responsible for staffing every 4th weekend in the Pediatric Pharmacy Satellite and for 4 hours in the Emergency Department (pediatrics/adults) during their on-call shift.
The resident will be expected to take overnight in-house on-call in the medical center approximately one out of every 14 nights. An on-call room is available for down time between responsibilities. The on-call program services both the pediatric and adult population at RUMC. Responsibilities during on-call include, but are not limited to: pharmacokinetic drug monitoring, response to drug information questions, emergency response, and approval of adult restricted antimicrobials.
