eGFR Test Results
Your eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate, a measure of your kidney's function) is based on your blood creatinine level but takes into account other factors including age and gender.
Until recently this equation included race. The inclusion of race, a social construct, is invalid because it falsely assumes there are biological differences in kidney function based on race. In 2021, the National Kidney Foundation and American Society of Nephrology made a new race-neutral equation (that does not use race), called the CKD-EPI 2021. At Rush we are committed to eliminating systemic racism and are using this new equation for all patient care.
If you are someone who identifies as African American or Black, your eGFR may now be a little lower but this does not necessarily mean that your kidney function has declined. Please contact your physician if you have any concerns about your eGFR.
