Rush University Medical Center has been named a Top Teaching Hospital by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit hospital watchdog organization. Leapfrog announced the recipients of its annual Top Hospital designations today.
Rush is the only academic medical center in Illinois to be named a Top Teaching Hospital and one of 48 recipients of the honor nationwide. Rush also is among an elite group of 105 hospitals that Leapfrog recognized in any of its four Top Hospital categories, which also include general, rural and children’s hospitals.
“We are humbled and grateful that the Leapfrog Group has recognized the high quality and safety of the care we provide to all of our patients, particularly in the midst of such a challenging year,” said Dr. Omar Lateef, president and CEO of the Medical Center.
The elite Top Hospital award recognizes the highest quality hospitals as identified through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Less than 5% of all eligible facilities receive the award, which is given to all hospitals in the four award categories that meet Leapfrog’s standards as defined in each year's Top Hospital Methodology.
This year’s methodology included meeting Leapfrog’s standards for computerized physician order entry and intensive care unit physician staffing; compliance with Leapfrog’s never events (serious preventable medical errors) policy; and demonstrating to the Top Hospital Selection Committee that “in general the hospital embodies the highest standards of excellence worthy of the Leapfrog Top Hospital designation.”
Hospitals also must achieve Leapfrog’s benchmarks on 36 national performance measures to evaluate individual facilities in seven domains: inpatient care management, inpatient surgeries, pediatric care, medication safety, maternity care, outpatient procedures, and infections.
“2020 put hospitals nationwide to the test in the most unforeseen and unprecedented ways, so we are particularly proud to recognize excellence in the hospital industry this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “All hospitals deserve our gratitude and these facilities, in particular, shine.”
