The Rush Approach to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
When you suffer a disabling injury or illness, recovery can be physically and emotionally challenging. The compassionate, highly skilled physiatrists (physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists) at Rush use their expertise and the most advanced technologies to restore your function to the highest possible level.
Rush physiatrists evaluate and treat a wide range of conditions and illnesses in adults of all ages — including traumatic brain injury, stroke, neuromuscular disease, movement disorders, orthopedic and spine injuries, pelvic floor dysfunction and more. We address the unique rehab needs of children at our downtown campus.
Our physiatrists believe in treating the whole person, not just the medical condition. We take the time to understand not only your current physical condition, but your lifestyle, concerns, challenges and expectations.
Your physiatrist will work with you to set reasonable goals for improvement and develop a customized plan to help you achieve them. That may mean getting you back to your normal routine after surgery or an injury, finding solutions for chronic pain, improving your strength and balance, managing chronic health conditions or other interventions to give you a better quality of life.
Physiatrists also lead Rush's inpatient rehabilitation care teams.
Rush Excellence in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
- Specialized care: Many Rush physiatrists also have specialized training and are part of multidisciplinary teams, working together with other providers to deliver the highest level of comprehensive care for complex issues. Our physiatrists' specialties include spine and back care, pelvic floor dysfunction, brain injury (including stroke) and Rett syndrome, among others.
- Satisfied patients: At Rush, we believe the most important member of your rehab care team is you. We go above and beyond to make sure that you not only receive the best care, but that you feel supported and heard every step of the way. Our commitment to our patients shows — with patient satisfaction scores for rehabilitation above 90% for all three Rush hospitals.
- Helping you stay mobile: At Rush, we understand how important it is for you to be able to get around. Our comprehensive wheelchair clinic is designed to efficiently meet your mobility needs — from standard and manual wheelchairs, to scooters, to custom power chairs. During your visit, you will meet with a team that includes a physiatrist and an assistive technology professional. We will assess your needs, provide the medical documentation to support getting you the right equipment, and make sure you receive your equipment in a timely manner.
- Comprehensive prosthetics services: At our Prosthetic Clinic, Rush physiatrists partner with a certified prosthetist/orthotist to address the full spectrum of prosthetic needs. We’ll see you before amputation for a consultation to explain the prosthetic process, after amputation to set you up for a prosthetic, and after you’ve received your prosthetic for an evaluation and adjustments. Our team will provide the medical documentation to support the appropriate prosthetic and help to ensure that you receive your prosthetic as quickly as possible.
