All Rush laboratories meet standards set by the College of American Pathologists which help ensure the accuracy of pathology testing and diagnoses.
The Rush Approach to Pathology Services
As a patient at Rush, you will likely never meet your pathologist in person. But your pathologist plays a vital role in your care.
As experts in laboratory science, pathologists understand a lot about your health and any diseases you may have by examining body tissues and fluids.
Advances in molecular laboratory science are contributing to the expansion of precision medicine at Rush — which involves targeted treatments tailored to your unique genetic and clinical profile.
Rush pathologists conduct the most advanced laboratory tests on blood and tissue samples to identify microscopic molecules (for example, proteins, genes) tied to certain strains of infections or diseases.
Rush Excellence in Pathology
- More accurate, more rapid results: Rush pathologists use the latest technologies and approaches, which are revolutionizing lab science. This means you benefit from more accurate and specific test results. For instance, new molecular tests allow us to more easily identify genetic alterations on cancer tumors, which helps us pinpoint which medicine will help each cancer patient. It also means that you can get test results quickly, which helps ensure you receive proper treatment right away.
- Highly trained specialists: All of our pathologists specialize in diagnosing disease in specific types of tissues, organs or cells, such as the breast or the blood. They have undergone years of additional training, making them experts in their specific field and valuable members of the care team at Rush. They consult with your care team to help identify the best treatments for you and ensure those treatments are working.
- Comprehensive on-site laboratory services. Rush is a major academic health system with three full-service laboratories. We can perform most of the pathology tests you need in our labs. This means we can provide results quickly — getting you and your doctor the information you need right away.
- Convenient testing services. Each of our system hospitals has lab testing on site, which makes it easy and convenient for you to get the tests you need after visiting your Rush doctor. Alternatively, you can ask your doctor to help you identify a lab testing site near you that takes your insurance.
