Rush University Medical Center is among the top-scoring organizations on the 2024 Disability Equality Index for the sixth year in a row, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion for people with disabilities.
Rush earned a score of 90 and the honor of being named one of the nation’s “Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion.”
The Disability Equality Index, developed by the nonprofit Disability:IN, is an annual benchmarking tool that allows organizations around the U.S. to self-report and measure disability inclusion efforts.
“Achieving this designation as a 'Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion' reflects Rush’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. Rush has a long history of caring for and engaging patients, employees, faculty and students with disabilities, and fostering an environment that serves all,” said Rush President and CEO Dr. Omar Lateef.
Following are some of the inclusion efforts at Rush:
- The Americans With Disabilities Act Task Force works to ensure that Rush facilities, activities, services and meetings are accessible for all.
- Rush’s Disabilities Employee Resource Group plans and hosts events that provide a place to learn and form community.
- Each year, Rush employees with disabilities and chronic health conditions, caregivers and allies participate in Chicago’s Disability Pride Parade.
- Earlier this year, the Rush Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion hosted an all-day Disability Inclusion Symposium that included a panel of six employees with disabilities who shared their stories.
"Rush's commitment to hiring and supporting employees with disabilities goes back decades and has strengthened our foundational commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility,” said Kevin Irvine, senior talent acquisition consultant for individuals with disabilities at Rush.
“Our recognition through Rush's annual participation in the Disability Equality Index has allowed us to reach even more exceptionally qualified and dedicated people who are excited to join our team to help us achieve excellence in healthcare services, research and education.”
