Rush Medical College is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s student awards. Honorees in the Class of 2022 were selected by faculty, staff and classmates for achievements in academics, research, patient care and community service.
The award winners were recognized at the medical college’s annual Awards Ceremony and Commencement Banquet on Thursday, April 28. This year’s celebration was the first time the event was held in person since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to the awards presentations, the graduates recited the Hippocratic Oath for the final time together and this year’s class respondent, Alice Burgess, shared a toast to her classmates.
During her remarks, Burgess reflected on the challenges the world has faced during their four years of medical school, including the pandemic, racial injustice across the United States and the war in Ukraine.
“When we stood nervously at our White Coat Ceremony in 2018, none of us could have predicted how many unprecedented times lay ahead. It seems that we have completed the first chapter in our medical education in a very unique and challenging time for humanity,” she said. “Despite the darkness, our class does not look away from unfairness, inequality, or struggle. Our class looks towards it and squares up to fight against it… The silver lining is that we will have a pretty fantastic group of colleagues to collaborate with – both in this room and across the country. Using our authentic voices, we will work toward a better future for our communities, as so many of our role models at Rush do.”
