Rush Adopts CLEAR Easy-to-Use Patient Data Security

With the new partnership, patients can use a ‘selfie’ to reset their password for Rush MyChart

Rush University System for Health is partnering with CLEAR, the secure identity company, to make the health care experience simpler for patients through easy-to-use identity verification.

By adding CLEAR to the self-service Rush MyChart password reset, in the My Rush mobile app, patients will be offered CLEAR’s opt-in service to use unique characteristics — by taking a quick selfie — to securely and efficiently verify their identity. This provides an easy and secure password reset experience, so patients save time by not having to wait for help.

“CLEAR is powering easier health care experiences by transforming how identity is verified,” said Jeff Gautney, senior vice president and chief information officer at Rush. “Their experience solutions are seamless, efficient and centered around the patient. And by verifying with CLEAR, patients will be able to avoid long wait times for their password to be reset.”

Initially, Rush will offer patients both the current MyChart self-service password reset option and the CLEAR option. But Rush will transition to offering CLEAR as the only self-service option for resetting the password. The Rush MyChart Helpline performs over 12,812 password resets annually and will continue to support the full-service option for self-service issues.

In addition to improving the patient experience, CLEAR will significantly improve the security of patient health information.

“Health care service desks are all too frequently the target of bad actors attempting to gain unauthorized access to patient records so they can reset passwords, launch cyberattacks or steal someone’s identity,” Gautney added. “The best way to combat these threats is to move away from multi-factor authentication — which verifies devices — to CLEAR — which verifies the individual.”

“With CLEAR, patients don’t have to sacrifice user experience for security,” said David Bardan, head of healthcare at CLEAR. “We’re excited to partner with Rush to streamline patients’ access to their own health records at the same time we ensure providers in the Rush network can count on the industry-leading security standards CLEAR is known for.”

Rush is the first health system to utilize CLEAR’s out-of-the-box MyChart Password Reset integration with Epic Vendor Services, which other health care organizations can easily implement. When choosing to begin verifying through CLEAR, patients will be taken to a custom form that will match an existing MyChart user account, followed by a consent form to ensure compliance with the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act. Once successfully completed, patients will be taken to CLEAR for account creation, or identity verification if the user already has an existing CLEAR account. CLEAR will ask for a new password that meets all Rush MyChart password requirements and then return the user to MyChart to login.
