Clinical Trial Protocol Description:

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for heart disease and diabetes that includes high blood pressure, obesity, high blood glucose (sugar), low HDL (good cholesterol), and high triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood). This study compares two lifestyle programs that are designed to reverse the metabolic syndrome. Both programs are 24 months long and include nutrition education, physical activity coaching, and behavior modification. A total of approximately 600 participants are expected to take part in this study across 5 sites, with about 120 participants at Rush University Medical Center.

Clinical Trial Eligibility Criteria:

In order to participate you must meet the following criteria:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 80 years old.
  • Are motivated to eat healthier and be more active during the two year trial.
  • Have three or more metabolic syndrome risk factors.
  • Have no history of heart disease, stroke, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or another medical or psychiatric condition that could limit your ability to participate.
