Culture of Inclusion

Employee at Rush University System for Health

Commitment to equal opportunity, diversity, equity and inclusion is a critical part of our DNA at Rush. We are dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone — our employees and anyone who enters our doors — is treated fairly and with respect.

Because we are an academic health system, we have a special mandate to ensure that this commitment to an environment of inclusion is evident not just to our community and our patients, but also to our employees, students and physicians.

Excellence is for everyone. We demonstrate our dedication to achieving a diverse workforce by applying affirmative initiatives, equal opportunity and a nondiscrimination policy in all aspects of employment. This includes recruitment, hiring, promotions, discipline, terminations, wage and salary administration, benefits and training.

Here you’ll discover a unique working experience where collaboration creates a team that is greater than the sum of its parts. Our philosophy is rooted in our I CARE values: innovation, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence. This is the source of our inspiration as we create a workplace focused on making the best decisions for our patients.

People with disabilities

We’re committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce — and to establishing and maintaining an inclusive culture where everyone is set up for success. We encourage people with all types of disabilities to consider joining our team and to explore our career opportunities.

If you are considering employment here and have any questions, please feel free to contact our disabilities recruiter.

As a leader in increasing the accommodation and inclusion of people with disabilities in our services, education and employment, we’ve earned national recognition as a "Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion" every year since 2019. The recognition is based on a top score in the Disability Equality Index, an annual benchmarking tool that allows organizations around the nation to measure disability inclusion efforts. This joint initiative of Disability: IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities creates space for organizations and businesses to evaluate policies that improve the workplace for people with disabilities.

Disabilities Employee Resource Group

The Rush Disabilities Employee Resource Group launched in 2019 and is open to all employees — with and without disabilities or chronic health conditions — who are interested in sharing ideas, resources and ways to make our organization an even better place to work. Resource group members meet bimonthly and have planned webinars, volunteered to serve as mentors to our university students with disabilities, and organized our contingent that marches in Chicago’s annual Disability Pride Parade.

We want veterans to feel our support and find the tools they need to succeed. Programs and services for veterans and their families

Road Home Program: Connecting veterans and their families to the care, services and resources they may need as they return from military service. The program offers comprehensive diagnostic, treatment and referral services, through a network of collaborating community agencies.

Advanced Trauma Training Program: Designed to equip deploying military medical corps and civilian first responders with state-of-the-art knowledge and the hands-on skills required to respond to real-life emergency situations. The training prepares participants for the battlefield or for catastrophic events at home.

Military Occupational Code Translator: This tool is designed to help military veterans by matching military occupation codes to medical center job codes. Note: This tool is only available for positions at Rush University Medical Center.

Transgender and gender-diverse jobseekers

In 2019, we committed to the Hire Trans NOW campaign and joined the movement to end hiring stigma and employment discrimination against the transgender community. The Hire Trans NOW hiring challenge asks an organization to proactively recruit transgender job candidates and ensure all candidates regardless of gender identity, expression or history are given equitable consideration for open positions.

We offer an inclusive and welcoming environment where transgender and gender-diverse employees can be their authentic selves. This includes the following:

Employees can use their chosen names on their ID badges and official email addresses.

All employees may add their preferred pronouns to their IDs with badge toppers.

Comprehensive transgender health benefits are provided for employees and beneficiaries insured under our health plan, including counseling, hormone therapy, gender-affirmation surgery and all other treatments related to gender transition.

If you have any questions about employment opportunities, please contact our Hire Trans NOW liaison
