Pediatric Surgical Services Team

The pediatric surgical services team at Rush University Children’s Hospital is passionate about the care and well-being of children. Most have advanced training to care for the unique needs of children.

Their expertise ranges from providing anesthesia in just the right way to navigating a child’s anatomy in the operating room. It also includes helping your child cope before and after surgery through age-appropriate education and games.

At Rush University Children’s Hospital, your child’s health care team works closely together. They are in regular contact with each other as well as with you and your family. The team comprises the following health care professionals:

  • Specialty pediatric doctors have additional medical training in specific areas of expertise, such as pediatric cardiologypediatric otolaryngology (or ENT – ear, nose and throat), pediatric craniofacial/plastic surgerypediatric cancerpediatric surgery and pediatric neurosurgery.
  • Pediatric anesthesiologists have specialized medical training in caring for children; they sedate children during surgery and manage any pain that may arise.
  • Child life specialists help children learn how to effectively cope with their health challenges by educating them about procedures, guiding them through self-expression activities and engaging them in meaningful age-appropriate activities.
  • Nurses at Rush are on the front line of Rush’s efforts to provide quality care, receiving Magnet status four consecutive times for making outstanding nursing care the standard at Rush University Children’s Hospital.
  • Social workers specialize in helping families cope with the social and psychological challenges often associated with having a child who has complicated medical conditions.
