RUSH Craniofacial Center

There's a lot to consider when you’re choosing where to get care for a craniofacial condition. The RUSH Craniofacial Center team has years of expertise treating a wide range of craniofacial disorders, from common to complex, in patients of all ages. Conditions we treat include the following:

  • Anomalies of the teeth and jaw, including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues
  • Craniofacial syndromes (e.g., Apert, Crouzon, Pfeiffer)
  • Craniosynostosis, or premature fusion of an infant’s skull plates
  • Cleft lip and cleft palate
  • Hemifacial microsomia, in which parts of the face grow at different rates
  • Plagiocephaly, or flat head syndrome
  • Traumatic facial injuries
  • Vascular anomalies and other lesions of the face

Compassionate, personalized care

We offer a warm and welcoming office environment, where all the members of our multidisciplinary care team — craniofacial plastic surgeons, orthodontists, pediatric ENT specialistsspeech pathologists and other clinicians — work closely together to ensure that we maximize function and improve quality of life for every patient we treat.

We get to know our patients and their families well during the process of evaluation, diagnosis, surgery, recovery and ongoing care. And patients who come to us as children are our patients for as long as needed, often through their teen years and into adulthood.

Comprehensive services

Before complex surgeries, we use 3D models (based on images from our low-radiation cone beam CT scanner) to visualize the procedure and ensure that it's efficient and accurate. Our board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists are experts in the special considerations needed for surgical anesthesia and post-surgery pain control in children.

Our services also include the following:

  • Prenatal counseling for parents whose unborn babies have craniofacial anomalies, and coordination with your OB/GYN to help determine a plan for delivery and neonatal surgery if necessary.
  • A craniofacial speech clinic.
  • Feeding and swallowing therapy for children with cleft lip and cleft palate.
  • Evaluation by neurodevelopmental psychologists.
  • Orthodontic care for all children, whether they have craniofacial anomalies or not.

We also collaborate with clinicians in the Pediatric Aerodigestive Program to help provide coordinated, advanced care for children with complicated airway, swallowing and feeding disorders.

Craniofacial conditions often affect children's speech. Read this blog post about how speech language pathologist Karen Tessler, PhD, helps children at RUSH University Children's Hospital learn to communicate more clearly and with confidence.
