Deep Brain Stimulation Treatment Referrals at RUSH

Doctors discussing brain mri

With decades of experience, the team of neurologists and neurosurgeons at Rush are skilled practitioners of deep brain stimulation (DBS), a treatment modality that helps patients with movement disorders control their symptoms of tremor, rigidity, stiffness, slowed or abnormal movements and walking problems.

We perform a physical, neurological and neuropsychological evaluation to determine if DBS is the best therapeutic option for our patients, especially when medication fails to control their symptoms. Once it’s determined that DBS is the appropriate treatment, we implant small electrodes in the deep structures of the brain, which produce electrical impulses that help regulate abnormal ones. The electrodes are connected to a pacemaker-like power source that is implanted subdermally.

Our depth and breadth of experience in movement disorder neurology and functional neurosurgery enables us to excel in the identification of patients for DBS, accurate DBS lead placement, and expert programming of the device.

Why refer your patients here?

Nationally recognized care: The neurology and neurosurgery programs at Rush are ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Decades of experience: The movement disorders neurology group at Rush is one of the largest and most experienced groups in the world, with clinicians who specialize in managing the symptoms of Parkinson’s and other movement disorders.

Market leader: Rush treats the largest number of DBS patients in the Midwest.

Cutting-edge care: Rush is the first center in Illinois, and one of the first in the country, to offer patients remote DBS programming. This gives our providers the ability to program and reset DBS devices remotely, greatly reducing the number of trips patients have to make into the clinician’s office.

Specialized care: Although DBS surgeries are typically performed awake, Rush is the only center in the Chicago area to offer asleep DBS, where the patient receives DBS surgery under anesthesia, ensuring greater patient comfort.
