Clinical Services at Rush Youth Chemical Dependency Program at Downers Grove

The Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program at Rush Behavioral Health - Downers Grove is designed to help adolescents, ages 13 to 20 and their parents address the youth’s substance abuse and related problems. Adolescent drug and/or alcohol use often impacts one or multiple life areas, such as family communication, school performance, participation in structured extracurricular activities (sports, hobbies, etc.), peer group association and sometimes legal issues to name a few. Most patients come to treatment as a result of problems at school, home or the community. Many struggle with mood and/or behavior disorders that greatly influence their substance abuse, as well as depression, bipolar, anxiety, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders.

Because of the pervasive nature of substance abuse and the scope of related problems, intensive outpatient treatment includes multiple group therapy sessions per week with heavy parent involvement (see schedule below). The 12-step model of recovery and 12-step volunteers are part of the treatment process, as this has been demonstrated by research and experience to be the most effective method in addressing substance abuse problems. Participants are required to attend 12-step meetings, Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, obtain a 12-step sponsor and begin step work. Although group therapy is the primary method of treatment, individual and family sessions are valuable and may be scheduled with a program counselor outside of group sessions.

Abstinence from alcohol and drugs are part of the means to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Treatment educates adolescents and parents on the disease concept of addiction, the continuum of chemical abuse and dependency, relapse prevention dynamics and sober support system development. Additionally, concepts of adolescent psychosocial development, parenting with limits and consequences, family communication and healthy coping skills development are covered.
