Clinical Services at Rush Adult Chemical Dependency Program

There are two levels of care for day time treatment at Downers Grove:  partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP).  Both these programs are led by addiction specialists and credentialed clinicians.  Individuals with alcohol and substance use disorders are placed at the best level of care to arrest their disease process.  Both PHP and IOP allow patients to interact with a programmatic, structured therapeutic milieu.  Services address the individual medical, psychiatric, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients seeking to establish abstinence and enter into an ongoing recovery program.

Evening programs include IOP, low intensity (LIOP), and relapse prevention (weekly group).

PHP Program Structure
PHP is offered Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Patients in this level of care often are managing multiple problems, whether work restrictions, family conflicts, financial crises, or a secondary mental health diagnosis, such as anxiety disorders.  These hours usually require that a patient not be working and this assists them in placing all of their focus on recovery.

IOP (day or evening) Program Structure
Because this program offers fewer structured hours than the PHP, patients are expected to take an active role in utilizing community resources and family support for their ongoing recovery needs.  Day IOP hours are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday-Friday; the evening IOP hours are 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday.  The IOP addresses problems with interpersonal behavior, communication, coping, and problem solving skills; patients integrate new ways of thinking and behaving in daily life to support their ongoing recovery needs.

Program Components for PHP and IOP

  • Physician leadership and monitoring of program activities
  • Interactive group psychotherapy
  • Individual case management
  • Community meetings; advocacy with employers for job re-entry in recovery
  • Assistance with psychiatric issues, occupational functioning, family needs, or other issues as they arise
  • Didactic groups and educational presentations
  • Family groups
  • Involvement in 12-step or other social support group

Length of treatment is individualized according to need.  Most patients will be in treatment from 4 to 6 weeks.  Aftercare groups meeting weekly are recommended for at least 12 weeks.

LIOP Program Structure
LIOP is designed for those not assessed as addicted, but requiring psycho-education on the disease and its consequences, such as positive drug tests, that mandate substance abuse evaluation and services.  This program is offered Monday nights, 2 hour sessions for 4 weeks.

Relapse Prevention Group
This weekly group only includes patients who have had some significant recovery time followed by relapse.  Aftercare group can be combined with this group.
