Occupational Therapy at Rush University System for Health

Rush occupational therapists offer the highest level of care. Our team uses proven, custom strategies to help you fully engage and function in your daily life.

The Rush Approach to Occupational Therapy

If you struggle with everyday activities due to a disease, disorder, injury or other physical limitation, Rush occupational therapists can help.

Occupational therapists evaluate and focus on improving your ability to do daily functional tasks like bathing, getting dressed, cooking, driving and working. We also assess your home environment to recommend the necessary equipment to ensure your safety while increasing your independence.

Rush occupational therapists see patients of all ages — in the hospital and on an outpatient basis. We provide evidence-based therapies for a wide range of conditions, from stroke to lymphedema to hand injuries. We also assist with recovery for people who have had surgery, including amputation and gender affirming procedures.

Our skilled, highly trained therapists look at the big picture to identify all of the factors that are keeping you from doing the things you want and need to do. We then develop a personalized strategy to address those deficits, working with you to maximize your hand and arm strength, coordination, visual perception, balance, cognition and/or endurance.

Rush Excellence in Occupational Therapy

  • Recognized for quality: Occupational therapists are vital members of Rush's multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams. All three of our Rush hospitals are recognized for excellence in rehabilitation — including receiving 4- and 5-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and certification from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
  • Specialized training: A number of Rush occupational therapists received specialty certification in areas like stroke, Parkinson's disease and lymphedema. We also have certified therapists dedicated to upper extremity (hand, wrist, forearm and elbow) rehabilitation. Certified OTs are considered experts in that specific condition, providing the highest level of focused care alone or as part of your specialized treatment team.
  • Specialized services: As part of our mission to tailor care to your needs, we offer a variety of specialized occupational therapy services. For instance, we offer breast cancer rehabilitation to help you overcome difficulties performing everyday tasks caused by reduced arm strength. And driver's rehabilitation to keep you driving safely, including assessing the need for adaptations — like hand controls — to your car or van.
  • Supportive treatment for children with disabilities: Children with disabilities, including autism, can benefit from working with our experienced occupational therapists. Our team focuses on helping them participate fully in school and develop social skills using approaches like sensory integration therapy.
